Heating Your Pool

Heating Your Pool – A Quick Guide

The SOLS mobile season is about to start so if you haven’t begun to think about heating your pool, now is the time to do it. Currently, Australia is experiencing a weather event called La Niña. La Niña typically causes:

  • Increased rainfall across much of Australia
  • Cooler daytime temperatures (south of the tropics)
  • Warmer overnight temperatures (in the north)
  • A shift in temperature extremes
  • Decreased frost risk
  • Greater tropical cyclone numbers
  • Earlier monsoon onset

As we experience this extreme weather, it’s crucial to know how to maintain our pools and our heating systems so we can get the best out of our pools and the time that we get to spend in them.

Here are a few tips below to think about;

Keep the pump, and solar turned on all day when the sun is shining even if it is not that warm. Solar heating consists of black tubing, which is located on our roofs; the black tubing absorbs the heat energy from the sun. Generally, a roof is hotter than the ambient temp, leaving your pump running on a sunny day will heat your pool faster.

Leave your pool blanket on when the pool is not in use as heat can escape when exposed. If you don’t have a thermal blanket, invest in one, you won’t be sorry!

Setting the temperature of your pool slightly higher than standard (by 1-2 degrees) will benefit you when the sun is not shining. It won’t cost you more to heat your water but, ensures that the water will be warmer on the cooler days.

When swimming lessons are conducted at home, it’s essential to provide the perfect learning environment; if a child becomes cold, they find it difficult to concentrate and can waste valuable lesson time.
